The Counseling Center > Adolescent Development Program

Building a strong foundation

Adolescence can be a difficult period to navigate for many young people. Many teens today experience issues that hinder or thwart development into healthy adulthood, including anxiety, depression, school failure and refusal, acting out and addiction. Even well-functioning teenagers at times struggle with the stress and pressure presented by high school and adolescence.

Our highly trained and experienced clinicians understand these issues, and they recognize the tremendous opportunities for learning and growth presented by the many obstacles teenagers face.

In our work with adolescents, relationship building is at the core of our model. Developing a relationship with adolescent clients is essential to providing effective counseling and therapy services, regardless of the presenting issues. During individual therapy, our therapists use a treatment model that develops relationships with teens in real life settings outside of the office. This provides context for teens to practice the change that therapy is working to produce. Additionally, this gives our clinicians the opportunity to exemplify such qualities as integrity, respect for others, patience, kindness and assertiveness.

We work with adolescents in three ways:

  1. Individual Treatment: We offer an innovative treatment model based on relationship and real-world experiences that lead to change and growth.
  2. Weekly Therapy Groups: Groups are an exciting opportunity for adolescents to build community and integrate healthier behaviors with peers. We offer three groups for adolescents and young adults:

Young Adult Group meets on Tuesdays at 8:00pm. It is an ongoing group for clients ages 18 to 24. The group seeks to help guide participants into a healthy young adulthood. Led by: Jennifer Geiter, LCSW.

Teen Boys Group meets on Tuesdays at 6:00. The group helps boys in high school learn healthy boundaries, integrity and life-skills. Led by: John Fiene, LCSW.

Teen Girls Group meets Wednesdays at 7:30. It is for girls in high school. The group helps members work towards change, growth and discovering the truth of who they are. Led by: Jennifer Geiter, LCSW.

  1. Time-Limited Workshops: Topics include: managing and coping with anxiety, stress reduction, college preparedness, and other relevant topics.
  2. Retreats: We offer three-day intensive retreats for adolescents and young adults on a variety of topics.
